圣经中多次出现“四十”这个数字

1. 大洪水持续了四十昼夜 – “挪亚方舟” 《创世记》7:4 因为再过七天，我要降雨在地上四十昼夜，把我所造的各种活物，都从地上除灭。For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.《创世记》7:12 四十昼夜降大雨在地上。And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
2. 摩西两个四十昼夜
   • 摩西第一次上西奈山顶，与上帝独处，领受了刻有十诫的石版，以及关于建造会幕和颁布律法的详细教导。《出埃及记》24:182 摩西进入云中上山，在山上四十昼夜。And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
   • 摩西第一次下山时，看到百姓拜金牛犊，一怒之下摔碎了石版。随后，摩西再次上山，并按上帝的吩咐重凿了石版，上帝重新将十诫刻在上面。《出埃及记》34:28 摩西在耶和华那里四十昼夜，也不吃饭也不喝水。耶和华将这约的话，就是十条诫，写在两块版上。And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
3. 以色列人的四十天和四十年
   • 以色列人即将进入上帝应许的迦南美地时，摩西派了十二个探子去侦察了四十天（民数记 13:25）。 十个探子带回了负面报告，声称无法战胜当地的巨人，并散布了恐慌，导致以色列百姓集体抱怨和不信。上帝宣布，由于他们不信，他们必须在旷野漂流，每年抵偿探子侦察的一天，直到整整四十年。《民数记》14:34： “按你们窥探那地四十日的数目，你们要担当你们的罪孽四十年，就是一年顶一日，你们就知道我与你们疏远了。”
4. 耶稣的两个四十天
   • 旷野禁食四十天 – 这是指耶稣在开始传道事工之前，被圣灵引到旷野，禁食并受到魔鬼试探的四十昼夜（《马太福音4:1-11》、《马可福音1:12-13》、《路加福音4:1-13》）。
   • 耶稣复活显现四十天 – 这是指耶稣被钉十字架后复活，直到升天之间的四十天《使徒行传1:3》他受害之后，用许多的凭据，将自己活活的显给使徒看，四十天之久向他们显现，讲说神国的事。To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
5. 摩西律法规定，对犯错者施行的鞭打，最多不能超过四十下《申命记》25:3 只可打他四十下，不可过数。若过数，便是轻贱你的弟兄了。Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
